About winery
Križ Winery, a family-owned winery located in Prizdrina on the Pelješac Peninsula, began its journey by planting the first vineyards, among which the Grk variety stands out – a variety that was once common in Pelješac but has not been planted for many years. Today, the Križ family owns three hectares of vineyards on several locations. In addition to the essential Plavac mali and Grk, they also grow Rukatac, and recently planted Trnjak, which they believe will produce excellent results.
All the wines are made exclusively from their own grapes, and the vineyards are worked by hand, using only biodynamic preparations, although, as they say, they are not biodynamic practitioners. Annually, Križ Winery fills between eight and ten thousand bottles, with half white and half red wine.
The Grk, planted on the Križ hill, after which the winery is named, grows on sandy soil similar to that of Miloš’ Ponikve vineyards. From this vineyard comes “Milo”, a Plavac mali named after his late father. Križ also produces a Plavac mali with a white label, mostly from vineyards by the sea in Postup (80% Postup, 20% Križ).
Despite the different terroirs, both Plavac – red and white – are excellent wines, with soft tannins, dense and full of old-fashioned Plavac flavor, very drinkable despite their high alcohol content. Križ Plavac has gained popularity beyond Croatia, being exported to the United States and also featured on the wine lists of Michelin-starred restaurants.
