Black Island Winery

About winery

Black Island Winery opened its doors in 2018 on the site of the former agricultural cooperative Jedinstvo, historically significant as the first to produce wine from the indigenous pošip grape variety. The name draws inspiration from the ancient Greek “Korkyra Melaina” and Latin “Corcyra Nigra,” meaning Black Korčula. This name reflects the island’s lush Mediterranean vegetation, while Korčula is also renowned for its rich tradition of viticulture and winemaking. The winery’s vineyards are located near Smokvica, a region famous for pošip cultivation. Their portfolio features two premium pošip labels – “Merga Victa Pošip” and “Dalmatian Dog Pošip,” both of which have won multiple Decanter awards. In addition to the pošip variety, Black Island Winery offers a label featuring the red grape variety babić under the name “Dalmatian Dog Babić.” Their portfolio also includes a rosé wine label and a unique pošip variation called “Pošip Sur Lie.” The winery offers wine tastings and guided vineyard tours. Through the dedicated efforts of the team, production has grown from an initial 20,000 bottles to an impressive 140,000 bottles annually, all while maintaining exceptional quality. The winery supports 50 local growers in Smokvica by purchasing their grapes, thereby continuing the long-standing tradition of viticulture and contributing to the development of the local community.

About

Igor Radovanović

Igor Radovanović, a winemaker from Korčula, stands out as one of the leading young enologists in Dalmatia. Together with his colleague Nikola Mirošević, also an enologist, he is dedicated to reviving the former glory of the winery in Smokvica, which now operates under the name Black Island Winery with the Merge Victa brand. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb, following a natural path to his calling. His passion for knowledge and perfection led him to consultancy work, where he oversaw the development of several wineries in Smokvica and Čara. Swedish investors hired him when they purchased vineyards in Jadrtovac near Šibenik, where quick and notable results were achieved. In Smokvica, he participated in the restoration of the winery and the reestablishment of grape purchasing, resulting in multiple successes, including winning medals at the prestigious Decanter competition.
